The cost of DR-TB drugs are so high that most of the people affected by DR-TB do not have access to life saving medications. For the “lucky” ones that do have access, the treatment is long and painful. It can take up to 2 years, 14,6000 pills, and 8 months worth of daily injections to cure DR-TB. Many people living with DR-TB drop out of treatment plans because it severely hampers daily functioning and ability to maintain a normal lifestyle.

We need better treatment now! Learn more about the manifesto.

Food for thought.

Food for thought.

Photo

Scientists Report First Cure of HIV In A Child, Say It’s A Game-Changer

Scientists believe a little girl born with HIV has been cured of the infection.

She’s the first child and only the second person in the world known to have been cured since the virus touched off a global pandemic nearly 32 years ago.

Doctors aren’t releasing the child’s name, but we know she was born in Mississippi and is now 2 ½ years old – and healthy. Scientists presented details of the case on Sunday at a scientific conference in Atlanta.

The case has big implications. While fewer than 130 such children are born each year in the U.S., an estimated 330,000 children around the world get infected with HIV at or around birth every year, most of them in sub-Saharan Africa.

Until now, such children have been considered permanently infected. Specialists thought they needed lifelong antiviral drugs to prevent HIV from destroying their immune system and killing them of AIDS.

The Mississippi child’s surprising cure came about from happenstance – and the quick thinking of a University of Mississippi pediatric infectious disease specialist named Hannah Gay.

So for example, I’m a three-time survivor of rape, and about that I have no shame, because it was never my shame to begin with—it was the perpetrator’s shame. And only when I was a grown empowered adult and had healthy boundaries and had the opportunity to do helpful work on that trauma was I able to say, okay, that perpetrator was shameless, and put their shame on me. Now I gave that shame back, and it’s my job to break my isolation and talk with other girls and other women.”

- Ashley Judd, possible Kentucky Senate candidate, opened up about sexual assault in a speech in DC today.

Will Some Tiny — But Potent— Foes Benefit From Sequestration?

There’s been a lot of discussion recently about how the U.S. sequestration will impact funding for public health, both here in the U.S. and worldwide.

The Washington Post’s World Views blog speculated on how “people living with TB, AIDS and malaria in developing countries would be impacted by the 5.3 percent across-the-board funding cut:”

HIV/AIDS treatment for 171,900 people would not be available, potentially leading to 39,200 more AIDS-related deaths

1.2 million fewer insecticide-treated mosquito nets would be procured; 2 million fewer people would receive treatment.

37,400 fewer people with TB would receive treatment, 200 fewer people with multidrug-resistant TB would get treatment.

836,800 fewer pentavalent vaccines for children would be available, potentially leading to 8,900 more deaths from preventable diseases.

To bring attention to this issue, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Matt Davies recently drew a cartoon, titled “Sick,” in collaboration with the non-profit The ONE Campaign,

Here’s what Davies said motivated him to create the cartoon:

A decade of genuine progress in preventing and controlling the proliferation of preventable, lethal diseases among the most vulnerable populations within developing nations (aka: women and children) will literally be devastated by across-the-board budget sequestration. Not many people know that.

Streptococcus

Strep Throat

http://phroyd.tumblr.com

Streptococcus is a large family of bacteria, which include both the good guys and the bad guys.

S. pharyngitis causes strep throat while other species in the family cause pink eye, pneumonia and meningitis.

But some streptococcal species are completely harmless. They just hang out in our mouth, skin and gut without making a peep. And, others are super useful for making cheese and yogurt. Without S. thermophilus, Swiss cheese wouldn’t be nearly as holey and yummy.

Some words I wouldn’t mind adding to my vocabulary from Sense...

Some words I wouldn’t mind adding to my vocabulary from Sense and Sensibility:

Droll: Curious or unusual in a way that provokes dry amusement

Temporizing: (1) Avoid making a decision or committing oneself in order to gain time

Archness: inappropriate playfulness

Desert: (2) A person’s worthiness or entitlement to reward or punishment

I went to the Student Health Center—they were completely unhelpful, choosing to lecture me about the importance of safe sex (recommending condoms) instead of actually listening to my problem.

Then I went to Planned Parenthood. The Nurse Practitioner took one look at my fading bruises and stopped the exam. She called in the doctor. The doctor came in and simply asked me: “Are you ready to leave him?” When I denied that I was being abused, she didn’t argue with me. She just asked me what I needed. I said I need a birth control method that my boyfriend couldn’t detect. She recommended a few options and we decided on Depo.

When I told her that my boyfriend read my emails and listened to my phone messages and was known to follow me, she suggested to do the Depo injections at off hours when the clinic was normally closed. She made a note in my chart and instructed the front desk never to leave messages for me—instead, she programmed her personal cell phone number into my phone under the name “Nora”. She told me she would call me to schedule my appointments; she wouldn’t leave a message, but I should call her back when I was able to.

And that was it. No judgment. No lecture. She walked me to the door and told me to call her day or night if I needed anything. That she lived 5 blocks from campus and would come get me. That I wasn’t alone. That she just wanted me to be safe.

I never called her to come to my rescue. But I have no doubt that she would have come if I had called. She kept me on Depo for a year, giving me those monthly injections in secret, helping me prevent a desperately unwanted pregnancy.

I cannot thank Planned Parenthood enough for the work they do.
”

-
Curious Georgiana (via ummhuraira)

Such idealism has seeded the world with some of its greatest accomplishments and social institutions. I can change my own life and practices to make these ideals live in what I do in my life today.”

-
James Orbinski, former president of MSF, An Imperfect Offering

Today, we are reminded to have a dream.
